Travel Insurance for a UK Visa: What You Actually Need

The UK sets no published insurance minimum, unlike Schengen. Where cover actually fits in a UK application, why it is not the Immigration Health Surcharge, and what the worldwide zone pays.

A UK visa application is different from a Schengen one in a way that catches people out. The UK does not set a published minimum insurance figure the way Schengen does with its EUR 30,000 rule. That does not mean insurance is pointless for a UK trip. It means the reason to hold it changes.

This guide explains where insurance actually fits in a UK application, what our cover pays on a UK trip, and what to confirm before you submit. You can price your own travel dates at any point.

Is travel insurance required for a UK visa?

The UK does not publish a fixed insurance minimum as a standard visitor visa condition in the way Schengen states do. What a caseworker does assess is whether you can support yourself during the visit, including covering the cost of any medical care you might need.

Insurance is one of the ways applicants demonstrate that, alongside the rest of their financial evidence. It is supporting material rather than a box with a published number attached.

Separately, some UK routes carry an Immigration Health Surcharge, which is a fee paid to the Home Office for access to the NHS. That is not travel insurance and travel insurance does not replace it. They are different things with different purposes, and one does not substitute for the other.

Requirements and fees change. You can price a UK trip in the meantime. Confirm the current rules for your specific route with UK Visas and Immigration or the visa application centre handling your file before you rely on anything here.

Why you want it anyway

Set the visa question aside for a moment. A UK trip can go wrong in the ordinary ways any trip goes wrong, and the costs are in pounds.

The UK sits on our worldwide zone, which carries the higher limits:

CoverYou can claim up toYour excess
Emergency medical and associated expensesEUR 35,000EUR 50
Medical evacuationIncluded aboveNot stated
Repatriation of remainsEUR 1,500Not stated
Emergency dental treatmentEUR 200Not stated
COVID-19 quarantine accommodationEUR 90 per day, up to 14 daysNil
Loss of checked-in baggageEUR 20 per kg, up to EUR 500Nil
Baggage delayEUR 400 (EUR 50 per 4 hours)10 kg
Loss of passport or travel documentsEUR 75010% of the amount claimed
Loss of personal moneyEUR 3006 hours
Trip delayEUR 500 (EUR 50 per 6 hours)Nil
Missed departure or connectionEUR 5006 hours
Legal expensesEUR 400Nil
Bail bondEUR 2,000Nil
24/7 travel assistanceIncludedNil

Reading the excess column. The excess is the first part of a claim you pay yourself. Nil means there is none, so the insurer pays from the first naira. Not stated means our schedule does not set one for that benefit, so check your policy wording. Some excesses are a length of time rather than money: a "6 hours" excess means the delay has to pass six hours before anything is payable.

Two benefits matter more on a UK trip than people expect. Loss of passport or travel documents at EUR 750 covers the scramble of replacing a passport far from home, and the EUR 750 worldwide limit is substantially higher than the EUR 200 on the Schengen zone. Medical evacuation is included within the medical benefit on worldwide, where Schengen does not cover it at all. The full worldwide schedule is published.

What to get right on the certificate

  • Exact dates. The certificate should cover your full intended stay, outward and return. Mismatched dates are the most common avoidable problem in any visa file.
  • Correct names. Names must match the passport exactly, in the same order.
  • Buy before the appointment. The certificate needs to be in the bundle you submit, not emailed afterwards.
  • Keep the policy wording. The certificate summarises. The wording is the contract, and both arrive when you complete a purchase.

One thing no policy can do

Travel insurance does not improve your chances of a UK visa being granted. It supports the financial picture you are presenting, nothing more. The decision belongs to the caseworker and rests on your whole application.

If anyone offers you insurance on the promise that it secures a visa, that is a reason to walk away from them, not a reason to buy.

Common questions

Is travel insurance mandatory for a UK visa?

The UK does not publish a fixed insurance minimum the way Schengen states do. Caseworkers assess whether you can support yourself during the visit, and insurance is one of the ways applicants evidence that. Confirm the current rules for your route with UK Visas and Immigration.

Does travel insurance replace the Immigration Health Surcharge?

No. The surcharge is a Home Office fee for NHS access on certain routes. Travel insurance is a separate commercial policy. One does not substitute for the other.

How much medical cover do I get for a UK trip?

The UK sits on our worldwide zone, with emergency medical and associated expenses covered up to EUR 35,000 with a EUR 50 excess, including treatment for COVID-19. Medical evacuation is included within that benefit.

What if I lose my passport in the UK?

Loss of passport or travel documents is covered up to EUR 750 on the worldwide zone, with an excess of 10 percent of the amount claimed.

Will insurance get my UK visa approved?

No. It supports the financial evidence in your application. The decision rests entirely with the caseworker.

When do I receive the certificate?

Once your completed application is paid. It is sent to your email address.
