Travel Insurance Nigeria to UK: Cover for the Trip Itself
The NHS is not free for visitors. What a UK trip actually costs when something goes wrong, what the worldwide zone pays, and the flight problems worth planning for.
This is not about your visa application. That is a separate question with its own answer. This is about the journey itself: the flight, the weeks you are there, and the specific ways a UK trip costs money when something goes wrong.
The single fact worth knowing before you fly is that the NHS is not free for you. Most overseas visitors are charged for hospital treatment in the UK, and the bill goes to the patient. You can price cover for your dates before reading further.
The NHS will treat you and then charge you
Emergency departments and GP consultations are broadly accessible, but hospital treatment that follows is chargeable for most visitors from outside the UK, and overseas visitor charges are applied at above the standard rate. The hospital identifies chargeable patients and invoices them.
This catches Nigerian travellers out more than any other UK fact, because the NHS has a reputation abroad for being free. It is free at the point of use for residents. You are a visitor, and the arrangement is different.
Separately, if your visa route required you to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge, that is a Home Office fee giving NHS access on that route. It is not travel insurance and travel insurance is not a substitute for it. Confirm what applies to your own route with UK Visas and Immigration.

Get Your QuoteWhat the worldwide zone pays on a UK trip
The UK sits outside the Schengen area, so a UK trip uses our worldwide zone. That matters, because worldwide carries the higher limits and four benefits Schengen does not have at all.

Reading the excess column. The excess is the first part of a claim you pay yourself. Nil means there is none, so the insurer pays from the first naira. Not stated means our schedule does not set one for that benefit, so check your policy wording. Some excesses are a length of time rather than money: a "6 hours" excess means the delay has to pass six hours before anything is payable.
If you are visiting family and someone is likely to need to reach you in an emergency, note emergency family travel and the extended hospitalisation benefit. Both are worldwide only. Compare both zones on the cover page.
The flight, and what usually goes wrong with it
Most Lagos and Abuja departures to the UK are overnight, arriving in the morning. Two things go wrong often enough to plan for.
- Delays and missed connections. If you connect through a European or Gulf hub, a late first leg can cost you the second. Missed departure or connection pays up to EUR 500 with a six hour excess.
- Baggage that arrives later than you do. Baggage delay pays EUR 400, accruing at EUR 50 per four hours on worldwide. Keep receipts for anything you buy to cover the gap.
- Winter weather. UK airports disrupt in December and January. Build the possibility into your plans rather than your hopes.
- Documentation. Any delay claim rests on airline paperwork. Ask for written confirmation at the airport, not afterwards.
If you lose your passport in the UK
Loss of passport or travel documents is covered up to EUR 750 on the worldwide zone, with an excess of 10 percent of the amount claimed. That is the highest document limit in our schedule, and substantially above the EUR 200 on the Schengen zone.
It matters more than the number suggests. A Nigerian passport carries your UK visa, and replacing both from inside the UK is slow, expensive and disruptive to everything else you planned. Report the loss to the police and keep the report, because a claim needs it.
Cover the whole trip, not just the flight
Your certificate is issued once your paid application completes, then emailed to you.
Start Your ApplicationBefore you fly
- Save the 24/7 assistance number where you can reach it without luggage or mobile data.
- Leave a copy of the certificate and your policy number with someone at home.
- Photograph your passport and visa page and store the image somewhere you can reach from any device.
- Know your medical limit and your EUR 50 excess before you need them.
- Keep every receipt and every piece of airline paperwork for the duration of the trip.
Cover should start the day you leave Nigeria and run to the day you actually return, not the day term or your meeting ends. If those dates differ, use the real ones.
