Travel Insurance in Nigeria: The Complete 2026 Guide
What travel insurance actually pays, what you pay yourself, and how to buy it from Nigeria. Real limits and excess figures from our own cover schedule.
Most Nigerians buy travel insurance because an embassy asked for it. That is a fair reason to start, but it is not the reason the cover matters. The policy you attach to a visa file is the same policy that pays a hospital in a country where you do not speak the language and do not know what anything costs.
This guide explains what travel insurance actually does, what it pays, what you pay yourself, and how to buy it from Nigeria. Every figure below comes from our own cover schedule rather than a brochure. You can see the price for your own trip dates at any point.
What travel insurance actually covers
Travel insurance is not one benefit. It is a schedule of separate limits, each with its own ceiling and, in some cases, its own excess. The excess is the first part of a claim you pay yourself, and it is the number that surprises people most at claim time.
Our cover is grouped into four areas:
- Medical. Emergency medical and associated expenses up to EUR 35,000 worldwide, including treatment for COVID-19, with a EUR 50 excess. This is the benefit that matters most and the one embassies care about.
- Baggage and documents. Loss of checked-in baggage, baggage delay, loss of passport or travel documents, and loss of personal money.
- Disruption. Trip delay and missed departure or connection.
- Other. Legal expenses, bail bond, and 24/7 travel assistance you can call from anywhere.
Limits are per person, per trip, and the full schedule sits on the travel insurance page. Your policy wording is the full contract and takes precedence over any summary, including this one.

Two zones cover most Nigerian travellers. Worldwide applies to destinations such as the UK, Canada, the United States, Turkey, China, India and South Africa. Schengen applies to the European countries inside the Schengen area, and its medical limit is set to meet the visa requirement.
| Cover | Worldwide | Schengen |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency medical and associated expenses | EUR 35,000 | EUR 30,000 |
| Medical evacuation | Included above | Not covered |
| Repatriation of remains | EUR 1,500 | EUR 1,500 |
| Emergency dental treatment | EUR 200 | EUR 150 |
| COVID-19 quarantine accommodation | EUR 90 per day, up to 14 days, no excess | |
| Loss of checked-in baggage | EUR 20 per kg, up to EUR 500 | EUR 300 |
| Baggage delay | EUR 400 (EUR 50 per 4 hours) | EUR 400 (EUR 50 per 6 hours) |
| Loss of passport or travel documents | EUR 750 | EUR 200 |
| Loss of personal money | EUR 300 | Not covered |
| Trip delay | EUR 500 (EUR 50 per 6 hours) | EUR 300 (EUR 50 per 12 hours) |
| Missed departure or connection | EUR 500 | EUR 300 |
| Legal expenses | EUR 400 | EUR 250 |
| Bail bond | EUR 2,000 | EUR 400 |
| 24/7 travel assistance | Included | Included |
Notice that the two zones are not the same product with a different price. Medical evacuation and loss of personal money are not covered on the Schengen zone, and several baggage and disruption limits are lower. If you are choosing between them, choose on where you are going, not on price. The quote page prices both zones for your dates.
Excess: the part people miss
An excess is what you pay before the insurer pays anything. On emergency medical the excess is EUR 50. On loss of passport or travel documents the worldwide excess is 10 percent of the amount claimed, so a larger claim carries a larger excess. COVID-19 quarantine accommodation carries no excess at all.
This is worth reading before you travel rather than after something goes wrong. A benefit with a low limit and a high excess may be worth very little in practice, and you are entitled to know that in advance, which is why every excess is published before you buy.
If you need it for a visa
A Schengen visa application requires travel insurance with a minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover, valid for the whole period you intend to stay. Our Schengen zone is set to that EUR 30,000 figure for exactly this reason.
Other missions set their own expectations, and they change. Always confirm the current requirement with the embassy or visa authority handling your application, then match the policy to it. A certificate that does not match your travel dates is the most common avoidable problem, so enter your real dates when you buy.
No insurance policy improves your chance of a visa being granted. It satisfies a documentary requirement. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

Start Your ApplicationWhat it costs
There is no single price. The premium depends on where you are going, how long you are away and the age of each traveller. A two week trip costs less than a full academic year abroad, and a Schengen trip prices differently from a worldwide one.
Rather than quote a figure that will be wrong for your trip, the quote page prices your actual dates and destination and shows you the amount before you commit. That is the only number that means anything.
Buying it from Nigeria
- Enter your destination and your exact outward and return dates.
- Check the destination is one we can issue. A small number are outside our underwriter's book, and the form tells you at the point of purchase rather than after payment.
- Review the limits and the excess for the zone that applies to you.
- Pay, and your certificate is issued once the completed application is paid.
Buy before you travel. Cover that starts after you have already left does not help you, and a certificate dated after your visa appointment is of no use to the mission reviewing your file.
Common questions
Is travel insurance compulsory for Nigerians travelling abroad?
It is not compulsory for every destination, but it is a documentary requirement for a Schengen visa, which needs a minimum of EUR 30,000 in medical cover. Other missions set their own rules, so confirm the current requirement with the embassy handling your application.
How much medical cover do I get?
Emergency medical and associated expenses are covered up to EUR 35,000 on the worldwide zone and EUR 30,000 on the Schengen zone, both with a EUR 50 excess. Treatment for COVID-19 is included.
What is an excess?
The excess is the first part of a claim you pay yourself. On emergency medical it is EUR 50. On loss of passport or travel documents the worldwide excess is 10 percent of the amount claimed. COVID-19 quarantine accommodation has no excess.
When do I get my certificate?
Your certificate is issued once your completed application is paid, and it is sent to your email address.
Can you cover any destination?
Most, but not all. A small number of countries sit outside our underwriter's book. The purchase form checks your destination at the point of sale, so you find out before you pay rather than afterwards.
Does travel insurance guarantee my visa?
No. It satisfies a documentary requirement in your application. The decision belongs entirely to the visa authority.
