Student Travel Insurance for Nigerians Studying Abroad

Duration is the decision that matters. What a student policy pays, where university health cover takes over, and the enrolment gap most students never think about.

Students get travel insurance wrong in a specific way. They buy a two week holiday policy for a nine month academic year, because the price looks better and nobody told them the difference. Then something happens in month four and the cover ended in month one.

If you are leaving Nigeria to study, this guide covers what to buy, how long for, and where travel insurance stops and your university's own arrangements begin. You can price your full academic dates at any point.

Duration is the decision that matters

Everything else is secondary. Your policy must run for the period you are actually abroad. A single semester is roughly four months. A full academic year with holidays is closer to nine or twelve.

Work out your real dates before you look at any price:

  • Your departure date from Nigeria, not your enrolment date.
  • Your genuine return date, including any time you stay after term ends.
  • Whether you plan to come home mid-year, and whether cover needs to continue while you are back.

Price the real span. A longer policy costs more because it covers more, and discovering a gap in month four is far more expensive than the difference in premium, so price the full span first.

What your cover pays

Most study destinations for Nigerian students, including the UK, Canada, the United States and China, sit on the worldwide zone. European study destinations inside the Schengen area use the Schengen zone, which also meets the EUR 30,000 visa minimum.

Two benefits matter disproportionately when you are a long way from family. Emergency family travel flies a relative out to you on an economy ticket. If you are hospitalised beyond five days, the policy covers a return economy ticket plus EUR 50 per day. Both are worldwide only, so a student in Europe on Schengen cover does not have them. Compare both on the cover page.

Loss of passport or travel documents is also worth noting at EUR 750 worldwide. A student passport carries a visa, and replacing both from abroad is slow and expensive.

Where travel insurance stops

This is the part students most often misunderstand. Travel insurance and a university or national health scheme are different things, and holding one does not mean you can skip thinking about the other.

  • Travel insurance covers emergencies while you are away from home: sudden illness, accidents, baggage, documents, delays.
  • University health cover or a national scheme, where it exists, deals with routine and ongoing healthcare during your studies. Some countries require you to join one, and some charge a separate fee at visa stage.

Ask your institution directly what is included, what is compulsory and when it begins. Many schemes only start on enrolment, which leaves the gap between landing and registration. That gap is exactly where travel insurance earns its place, so start cover from your departure date.

Cover the gap before enrolment

Your certificate is issued once your paid application completes, and is emailed to you.

Before you fly

  • Dates on the certificate match your real departure and return.
  • Your name matches your passport exactly, in the same order.
  • You know your medical limit and your EUR 50 excess.
  • You have saved the 24/7 assistance number somewhere you can reach without your luggage.
  • Someone at home has a copy of the certificate and your policy number.
  • You have confirmed what your university scheme covers and when it starts.

That last one is free to check and is the most common cause of a student discovering they were never covered for the thing that happened.

Common questions

How long should a student policy run?

For the full period you are abroad, from your departure from Nigeria to your genuine return. A semester is roughly four months and a full academic year closer to nine or twelve. Do not buy a short trip policy for a long stay.

Does travel insurance replace my university health cover?

No. Travel insurance covers emergencies while you are away. University or national health schemes deal with routine and ongoing care, and some are compulsory. Ask your institution what is included and when it starts.

Which zone applies to my study destination?

The UK, Canada, the United States and China sit on the worldwide zone. Study destinations inside the Schengen area use the Schengen zone, which meets the EUR 30,000 visa minimum.

Can my family reach me if something serious happens?

On the worldwide zone, emergency family travel covers one economy ticket for a relative. If you are hospitalised for more than five days, the policy also covers a return economy ticket plus EUR 50 per day. Neither benefit exists on the Schengen zone.

What if I lose my passport with my student visa in it?

Loss of passport or travel documents is covered up to EUR 750 on the worldwide zone and EUR 200 on Schengen. The worldwide excess is 10 percent of the amount claimed.

Should I buy before or after I get my visa?

If the mission asks for an insurance certificate in your application, buy before you submit. Otherwise buy before you fly, so cover starts the day you leave Nigeria.
