The questions to ask any insurer, the three numbers that actually matter, and the warning signs that should end a conversation. Apply them to us too.

Every travel insurer in Nigeria will tell you they are the best one. That is not useful to you, so this guide does something different: it gives you the questions to ask, the numbers to compare, and the warning signs that should end a conversation. Apply them to us as readily as to anyone else.

If you want to check our own answers while you read, the full schedule and a live price sit on the travel insurance page.

Compare the limit and the excess together

A premium on its own tells you almost nothing. Two policies at the same price can differ enormously once you look at what they pay and what you pay first.

For each policy, write down three numbers:

  • The emergency medical limit. This is the benefit most likely to be tested. Ours is EUR 35,000 worldwide and EUR 30,000 on the Schengen zone.
  • The excess on that benefit. The first part of any claim you fund yourself. Ours is EUR 50 on medical.
  • Whether medical evacuation is included. On our worldwide zone it sits inside the medical benefit. On our Schengen zone it is not covered, and we say so rather than leaving you to find out.

A high limit with a high excess can be worth less than a modest limit with none. Insist on seeing both before comparing anything. Ours are published on the cover page.

Seven questions worth asking anyone

AskWhat a good answer sounds like
Who underwrites this policy?A named underwriter, given without hesitation
What is the excess on each benefit?A published schedule, not "it depends"
Can you cover my exact destination?A check against their book, before you pay
When is the certificate issued?A specific trigger, such as on completed payment
What is excluded?A straight answer, ideally in writing
How do I claim, and what do you need?A documented process you can read now
Can I reach someone while abroad?A 24/7 number, not an office-hours line in Nigeria

The question about destinations is more important than it looks. Not every underwriter covers every country, and discovering that after you have paid is a genuinely bad position. Ask before money changes hands. Our form checks your destination when you request a quote.

Warning signs

  • Anyone who implies insurance secures a visa. It does not. It satisfies a documentary requirement. This claim alone should end the conversation.
  • No written cover schedule. If you cannot read the limits and exclusions before paying, you are buying a promise rather than a policy.
  • No named underwriter. You are entitled to know who carries the risk.
  • Pressure to pay immediately. A quote that cannot survive you reading it is not a quote worth taking.
  • Payment to a personal account. Pay a company through a proper channel, never an individual.
  • A certificate offered before payment, or backdated. Both are serious problems, and a backdated certificate can invalidate an entire visa application.

Match the policy to the trip, not the trip to the policy

The right cover depends on where you are going and for how long. A Schengen visa trip needs the EUR 30,000 medical minimum. A long-haul trip to Canada or the United States benefits from the worldwide zone, where medical evacuation is included and benefits exist for extended hospitalisation. A nine month academic year is a different purchase from a two week holiday.

Anyone recommending the same product regardless of your answers is not advising you. Our own quote page asks for destination, dates and travellers before showing a figure, for exactly this reason.

Where we are not the right answer

A small number of countries sit outside our underwriter's book, and we cannot issue for them. Our purchase form checks your destination at the point of sale so you find out before paying, but if your destination is one of them, you need a different provider. You can check your destination before paying anything. We would rather say that plainly here than have you discover it at checkout.

Common questions

How do I compare travel insurance companies in Nigeria?

Compare the emergency medical limit, the excess on that benefit and whether medical evacuation is included, all three together. A premium on its own tells you very little, because policies get cheaper by lowering limits, raising the excess or removing benefits.

What should I ask before buying?

Who underwrites it, what the excess is on each benefit, whether your exact destination can be covered, when the certificate is issued, what is excluded, how to claim, and whether there is a 24/7 number you can call from abroad.

What are the warning signs of a bad provider?

Any suggestion that insurance secures a visa, no written cover schedule, no named underwriter, pressure to pay at once, payment to a personal account, or any offer to backdate a certificate.

Is a more expensive policy always better?

No, but a cheaper one is usually cheaper for a reason. Check whether the saving comes from a lower limit, a higher excess or a missing benefit, then decide whether that trade works for your trip.

Can you cover every destination?

No. A small number of countries sit outside our underwriter's book. The purchase form checks before you pay, and if we cannot cover your destination you will need another provider.

Does any insurer guarantee a visa?

None can. Insurance satisfies a documentary requirement in the application. Any provider claiming otherwise is misrepresenting what they sell.
